Preschool Storytime 7/11/19 – DINOSAURS

Preschool Storytime 7/11/19 – DINOSAURS

I’m taking over preschool storytime this week while my colleague is away. I haven’t done a preschool storytime in forever, so I am following her format for the most part and giving it my own spin.

  1. Walk In Song – This is the way we do by Greg and Steve – Marina

  2. This is a fabulous song that my colleague uses every week. Such a good entrance song.

  3. Announcements

  4. talk about any upcoming programs, reminders about what’s going on, etc.

  5. Introduce the theme

  6. Rhyme – Open and Shut Them

  7. A great warm up rhyme to get out hand and voices working.

Open, shut them Open, shut them Give a little clap, clap, clap! Open, shut them Open, shut them Lay them in your lap, lap lap. Creep them crawl them , creep them crawl them Right up to your chin, chin chin Open up your little mouth But do not let them in!

  1. Song – We are the Dinosaurs by The Laurie Berkner BandThen I thought we could march around like dinosaurs. In my mind we are creating a conga line butttt maybe not.

  2. Book – Crunch the Shy Dinosaur by Cirocco Dunlap & Greg Pizzoli

  3. For our first book we are going to do one of my favorites. I love how interactive this one is; the kids can really participate with the story.

  4. Rhyme – This is big, big, big

  5. I love this one. It’s so much fun to make the movements and it actually starts to get the kids thinking about opposites.

This is big big big Hold (arms out to side) This is small small small (cup hands together) This is short short short (hold hands with palms facing each other) This is tall tall tall (reach one hand above head) This is fast fast fast (circle fists quickly) This is slow slow slow (circle fists slowly) This is yes yes yes (nod) This is no no no (shake head)

  1. Flannel/Prop – Dino Find

  2. For this one, I created a five or six flannel doors of different colors. I then printed and craft glued different animals and one dinosaur onto felt. Each animal was behind a different door and we have to find the dinosaur. I found this one online.

Dinosaur, dinosaur, are you behind the RED door?  Let me hear you ROAR!  Oink, Oink…NO!  It’s a pig! Dinosaur, dinosaur, are you behind the PURPLE  door?  Let me hear you ROAR!  Ribbet, ribbet…NO!  It’s a frog! Dinosaur, dinosaur, are you behind the ORANGE door?  Let me hear you ROAR!  ROAR!!!  Well that’s a ROAR but it’s not a dinosaur!  It’s a tiger! Dinosaur, dinosaur, are you behind the GREY door?  Let me hear you ROAR!  Cheep, cheep…NO!  It’s a bird! Dinosaur, dinosaur, are you behind the BLUE door?  Let me hear you ROAR!  ROAR!!!  YES!  It’s our dinosaur!

  1. Song – Shake My Sillies Out! by Raffi

  2. Most of my colleagues do three books in a storytime, but I think we get too wiggle for that sometimes. So we are going to shake our sillies out instead.

  3. Rhyme –Dinosaur, Dinosaur

  4. This is one I found online a while ago and can’t remember form where but it is great to lead into another story.

Dinosaur, dinosaur, turn around Dinosaur, dinosaur, touch the ground Dinosaur, dinosaur, reach up high Dinosaur, dinosaur, wink one eye Dinosaur, dinosaur, touch your nose Dinosaur, dinosaur, touch your toes Dinosaur, dinosaur, slap your knees Dinosaur, dinosaur, sit down please

  1. Book – Dino Bites by Algy Craig Hall / Suppose You Meet a Dinosaur: a first book of manners by Judy Sierra

  2. I am not sure which book I am going to use. I want to use the Sierra book but I am waiting for a decent looking copy to come in.

  3. Rhyme – Oh, Diiiiinosaur!

  4. I got this one online a few months back but the page is no longer active. It’s a fun interactive rhyme, so thank you to whoever posted it originally!

One dinosaur went out to play In a giant swamp one day She had such enormous fun That she called for another dinosaur to come… (Raise hands to mouth and call loudly) Oh, diiiiiinosaur! (Slap hands on thighs to make “running” sound)

Two, Three, Four…

Five dinosaurs went out to play In a giant swamp one day They had such enormous fun That they played and played until the day was done!

  1. Song/Shakers – Dinosaur Rock by Dancin’ Magic

  2. And of course, I can’t have a storytime without breaking out the shakers. I don’t care what age you are, shakers are fun!

  3. Reminder

  4. Closing Song – The More We Read TogetherThis is one my colleague does every week to end her storytime, I am keeping with her theme.

The more we read together,

together, together The more we read together, the happier we’ll be. Because your friends are my friends, and my friends are your friends. The more we read together, the happier we’ll be.

  1. Activity – Dinosaur Mazes and Connect the Dots

  2. There is always some sort of activity after Preschool storytime, so I found some activity sheets with a maze and connect the dots on line–all dinosaur themed.

How’d it go:

This was fun!  I love how much the preschoolers participate. I think I’d probably cut out a song or a rhyme next time and go at a little slower pace. I tend to jump right from one thing to another. Other than that, a fun group.

That’s all for now!
