ASL Baby Signs – DOG / CAT / THANK YOU
For my babies I teach them three vocabulary words in American Sign Language each week. We do a lot of repeats and stick to the easy movement signs. I generally use Baby Sign Language.com to check my signs.
Song – Hands are for Clapping by Jim Gill
One of my go to baby storytime songs. It’s slow and has simple movements.
Board Book – Boats Go by Steve Light
I like this one for the sounds. It’s great for working on phonetic awareness. I pass these boardbooks out to promote one-on-one reading.
Rhyme – Have you ever seen a sailboat
Put baby on your lap and sway back and forth with the music. Or just sway with the older kids.
Have you ever seen a sailboat, a sailboard, a sailboat Have you ever seen a sailboat waving its sails. Wave this way, and that way. This way and that way. Have you every seen a sailboat, waving it’s sails!
Rhyme – Rolling, Rolling Little Hands
I found this one online and I thought it would be a nice addition to baby storytime.
Rolling, rolling little hands Rolling down the street Rolling slowly Rolling faster Rolling, rolling little hands.
Tapping, tapping little toes Clapping, clapping little hands Hugging, hugging little arms…hugging tight, hugging tighter
Song – The Wheels on the Bus by Toddlers on Parade
Admit it you love wheels on the bus! And I find it is a good song to get those wiggles out to.
Finger Play – Slowly, Slowly
This one can be done as a tickle or as a finger play up and down baby’s arms or tummy.
Slowly, slowly, very slowly up the garden rail Slowly, slowly, very slowly creeps the garden snail Quickly, quickly, very quickly all around the house. Quickly, quickly, very quickly runs the garden mouse.
Book – Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton
I haven’t done this one in a LONG time, probably because I sing it while my grownups keep a beat on their knees. We literally have our own little hoedown.
Lift – Tick Tock, Tick Tock
This is a fun lapsit rhyme with a lift at the end as we “cuckoo!”
Tick tock, tick tock, I’m a little cuckoo clock. Tick tock, tick tock, now it’s one o’clock. Cuckoo! (Lift baby into the air) Continue with two and three o’clock.
Bounce – Bouncy, Bouncy Baby
I am always looking for new bounces and this one was just sooo fun. When you get to the BOOM at the end, you can lift baby or dip them.
Bounce, bounce, up and down, Bounce, bounce all around Bouncing fast Bouncing slow Bounce, bounce…BOOM!
Song/Shaker – On the Road Again by Joanie Bartels
Any song reproduced for kids by Willie Nelson is OK by me! I pass out shakers and we shake, shake, shake.
Song/Bubbles – Splish Splash by Mr. AI
The eye muscles we use to track the bubbles are the same muscles we use when we read.
Goodbye Rhyme – Clap Everybody and Say Goodbye
We end the same way we say hello, except we substitute “hello” for “Goodbye.”
Song – Clean It Up
Any good clean up song will work.
Song – Goodbye, So Long, Farewell by Music Together
I will always put this one on in the background as everyone leaves because I just love it!
How’d it go:
We had quite a large crew today but everyone did great! We liked the Slowly, Slowly rhyme/finger play a lot more than I thought we would. And I don’t know about the babies, but I enjoyed our hoedown with Boynton’s book!
